Reading Notes: The Search for Sita

Image
The story I am doing reading notes over is the search for sita, found in Gould. The Divine Archer part B. In this story Rama slays Vali with an arrow. Then after the monsoon season the search for sita began. Hanuman is helping rama with the search so he gives him a token, then heads south to the shore of the sea where they meet a vulture. This vulture tells then that sita is in lanka. Hanuman jumps to lanka and in the process he jumps over an enormous monster. What I got from this story is that if something on the other end of a journey or a task is important to you, you will fight through all obstacles to get to that end result. Reading Notes: Sitas Departure

Image
The story I am conducting reading notes over for this week is Sita’s Departure found in Gould Divine Archer part B. In this story Sita sees Rama up on the throne and she calls out to mother earth. And asks mother earth to take her if she has been true to Rama. A golden throne appears from the earth where sita takes a seat and then disappeared to the earth. What I got from this story was that if the ones you love do not believe you in the time they need to the most, then the only way they will see the truth is by losing you. Reading Notes: Rama Marches on Lanka

Image
The reading notes are conducted over “Rama Marches in Lanka” from the reading of Gould, Divine Archer. In this Rama and his army build a large bridge to lanka, that was engineered by the two monkeys Nala and Nila. Once Rama crosses over the bridge he signals his arrival to Lanka by shooting one of his arrows into Ravana’s own court, in the action of doing this Ravana’s crown gets knocked off.   In this story I took that the theme was that if you are going into enemy territory, go boldly. Reading notes: The Death of Dasharatha

Image
The story I chose to complete for the reading notes was “The Death of Dasharatha” from the Goud. Divine Archer. In this story The king realized that Rama’s exile fulfilled   long-ago curse. This is because as a young man, rama killed a boy that he thought he was an elephant. Dasharatha was cursed when he told the poor, blind parents, that he too would suffer the loss of a son. Then Dasharatha died after telling the story. From this story I can create a story following a similar plot. Reading Notes: Birth of Dasaratha's Sons

Image
The story I chose to do reading notes over was the Birth of Dasaratha’s Sons from the divine archer.   In this story four sons are born. They are sons of three different queens that Dasharatha is married to. In this story one of the queens Kaushalya witnesses baby Rama manifest as a cosmic being, and then go back to being a baby. This section will be very hard to write a story over because there is no plot to it, but what I could write about is that one of the kings queens births a special baby that will soon be great, and she witnesses it before her own eyes. Story Source:  Birth of Dasaratha’s Sons (Image Below is of Dasaratha's four sons being birthed, Image Source:   Birth of Dasaratha’s Sons )

Reading Notes: Arjuna's Dilemma

Image
The story I have read for Week 12 Reading notes was Arjuna’s Dilemma. In this story a battle is about to take place between an army commanded by Bheeshma fighting an army protecting Bheema.   Arjuna goes out in between the two armies and looks upon the opposite army. He is taken back and second guesses his god on why they are fighting. Because the uncles, sons, grandfathers that are on the other side are giving up their lives and wealth to Fight. Then the rest of the story he tries to convince the lord Krishna not to fight, And when it comes time to fight he says it would be better if the sons of Dhritaraashtra would kill me with their weapons in battle while I am unarmed, So he goes to the middle of the battle field and sets down his bow   and takes a seat in his chariot over whelmed. What I took from this story was that if violence is the only route out of a situation, you can still be your own person and choose peace instead. This can be made into a possible story for lat...

Reading Notes: The River Fish and the Money

Image
The story I chose to complete the reading notes over was The River Fish and the Money. This story comes from the Eastern Stories and legends part C. In the story there were two bothers that set out to complete a business task their deceased father was supposed to complete. On this trip the brothers collected the money and then stopped by the river while waiting for their boat. While they were waiting, they decided to eat, the older brother have food left over and threw it to the river to feed the fish. The younger brother was planning on tricking the older, to then take all the money, but messed up his own plan and threw the actual money into the river. The Spirit of the Ganges was looking out for the older brother because he was grateful, and had a fish eat the money. The fish was later caught and then sold back to the older brother where he found the money he had lost. The spirit explained to him the meaning and sent him on his way. What I got from this story was that if you look o...

Reading Notes: The Hawk and The Osprey Part C

Image
The Story I chose to take notes over was “The Hawk and The Osprey.” This story is found in the Eastern Stories and Legends part C which is retold stories of the Jataka tales. In the story Two hawks become mates and create friendships with many other animals. They then have young that are being harassed a threatened to be eaten by two men. The osprey defends the young as long as he can and then becomes tired. So, then the tortoise takes over until he is tired. Finally, the Lion is summoned for help and the men become terrified by the great beast and flee. All of these animals stay friends throughout time and then die as friends. What I got from this story was that if bonds of true friendship are made, not much and disrupt that. And friends that work together, for each other, stay together. From this story, a possible story could be made by switching characters and well switching location, and the source threat. (Image is of a hawk, which is fitting for the Story. Source:  Ha...

Reading Notes: The Crab and The Crane

Image
The story I am doing the reading notes over is The Crab and The Crane. This story comes from the jakata. In the story the there are three main characters, a crane, the fish and the crab. This story starts out with the crane befriending the fishes and tricking them into thinking that he would take them to a new pond that was amazing, he tricked them and then ate them. Then the next day he tried to trick the crab because he was hungry. But the crab saw through this and when the crane told the crab to let go oh his neck after the flight the crab refused and pinched his head off, to lay there with the pile of bones of fish. The plot I got from this was no not intend harm when trying to befriend people because it will come back to haunt you later, when not expecting it. Reading Notes: The Monkey and the Crocidile

Image
The story I chose to do the Reading notes over was the Monkey and the Crocodile.   This story is part of the Jataka tales. In this tale I was really intrigued by the story line. I found it similar to my first story the chipmunks and the eagle. But in this story the crocodile that was sent to bring the monkey back to his mother so she could eat his heart. But the monkey was too cunning for the crocodile and outsmarted him on multiple occasions. The plot I took from this story was do not always believe you are the smartest in the room because there is always someone that can out smart you. Reading Notes: Mahabharata part B

Image
For week 9 reading I am reviewing the Mahabharata part B. The story that stuck out the most to me in this story was Duryodhana’s Death. In this story Duryodhana took refuge beneath the water in a lake to not take the pandavas. Then he agrees to a single combat with Bhima. Bhima injures Duryodhana, and the Kaurava survivors raid the Pandava camp. Dhrishtadyumna and all the Pandava army is slayed. The news is taken back to the Duryodhana who was wounded and then dies. Everyone Dhritarashtra loves is dead, and in his grief, he wants to strangle Bhima, but being blind he strangled the statue and crushed it.  Close to the end of the Bharata family line, the wife of the dead gives birth to a child. Dhiritarasha and Gandhari retire to the forest where they die in a forest fire, making Yudhishthira, the plot I made from this story was that if you hide from your past, you will still get affected from them in the end. This can be made into an interesting story for later on and maybe used i...

Reading Notes: Mahabharata Part A

Image
For week nines reading noted I am reviewing the Mahabharata Part A. The specific section that drew my attention in this week was The Adventures of Prince Arjuna. In this Bhishma urges Duryodhana to make peace with Pandavas. Dhritarashtra gives Pandavas hald his kingdom to make their own royal city. Arjuna enters in to Draupadi’s room unbidden, so he has to go into self-imposed exile. While in exile he marries the water nymph Ulipi, and Arjuna was now able to defeat the alligator and by doing so he freed other water nymph’s that was cursed into alligator forms. Next Agni orders him to burn the Khandava forest to destroy nagas. Then Arjuna awakes, with the Gandiva bow by his side and he goes to the forest as ordered by Agni. But as the forest burns Indra arrives with pouring rain to rescue the nagas from the fire. Although this is a hard plot to follow I believe what I take from this section is the beginning where Arjuna marries the water nymph and saves her from the alligator form, ...

Reading Notes: Narayan Part D

Image
The reading of the Narayan Part D is the topic for these reading notes. The section “The end of Bhishma” is the portion I will be focusing on in these notes because I would like to write a story later on using the plot from this section. In this section Dhrishtadyumna tries to kill Drona to avenge his father’s humiliation. Bhishma attacks Krishna and draws blood. When Krishna goes to slay Bhishma with his discus, Arjuna begs him not to. Amba is reincarnated as Shikhandin, but because Bhishma recognizes Amba reincarnated he cannot attack. Bhishma is shot from behind by Arjuna and is no longer able to fight. Then karna now agrees to fight. The plot I took from this section is do not let cloudiness from your background fog your current judgement. Reading Notes: Narayan Part C

Image
The Reading notes for this week are over Part C of the Narayan. The section that i was drawn to was the voice in the lake. This section was very intriguing and could be made into a very interesting story. In this section Brahmin is desperate because a mysterious giant deer stole his staff and the kinddling he uses to make the sacrificial fire. nakula finds a lake, but a small voice told him he needs to answer these questions. He doesn't listen, he drinks it then dies Sahadeva, Arjuna and Bhima all meet the same fate. Yudhishthira finds his brothers dead, he hears the same questions and then answers them. This ended up being a test by his father Yama the god of death. the brothers came back to life and they receive the gift of unrecognizability for their thirteenth year of death. The plot from this story is listen to those that are telling you something, and never doubt yourself. Reading Notes: Narayan's Mahabharata Part B

Image
The reading I am doing notes over is the Narayan’s Mahabharata Part B. In this reading I found the Shakuni and Duryodhana section very interesting and a great story could be made from it, by carrying the original plot to a new setting. In this section Shakuni suggests to Duryodhana that revenge can be made via a game of dice against Pandavas. This is because Shakuni is an expert player, while Yudhishthira has no talent in this game. Vyasa warns Pandavas of the bad omens he sees. A great hall will be built by Dhritarashtra to rival the great hall of Pandavas. Vindura invites Pandavas to the crystal palace for a game of dice. Yudhishthira cannot deny it so he and Pandavas go to Hastinapura. The plot I can take from this story is that you want revenge on someone, so you challenge them to something you are very good at. But something they are not, and them compete in a field where you are most comfortable. Readings Source:  Narayan’s Mahabharata Part B (The picture is of the g...

Reading Notes: Naryan's Mahabharata Part A

Image
The reading I am doing writing notes over is the Narayan’s Mahabharata Part A. For this week’s reading I really found the section “The escape from the fire” very interesting, and would make a good topic for a possible new story. In this section Dhritarashtra has made Yudhishthira his heir, but he does not like his heirs popularity. Duryodhana and his brothers are not very popular with those of Pandavas .   Purochana who is an agent of Duryodhana builds a house of “joy” for Pandavas. The house was made of very flammable material to make it very easy to catch on fire. Then pandavas set fire to the house and escaped through a tunnel, but everyone around thinks he has died. The Plot I could use for this story is escaping a trap people do not realize you know of, and then living in hiding. Reading Notes: Divine Archer B

Image
For Reading Notes B I am continuing   with the book called DivineArcher by F.J Gould . The Section of this book in part B that drew my Attention this week was the section labeled Sita’s departure. I found it interesting because I believe it will be good to make an original story from. While easily changing characters and setting but keeping the same plot. This section is when Sita comes and sees Rama on Ravana’s throne. Then she asks Mother Earth to take her if shehas been true to Rama. Next a golden throne emerged from the earth, where Sita sat and disappeared into the earth. This plot could be made into a great story for an addition to the portfolio. Reading Notes: Divine Archer

Image
The Book I decided to read for this assignment was DivineArcher by F.J Gould . The section of the book that drew my attention this week was the section labeled the succession. This is when King Dasharatha was planning on making Rama his successor which his guru urged him to do so quickly. But because Kaikeyi was once granted two wishes, Dasharatha must do what she wishes. Kaikeyi demands that Bharata, Rama’s brother be named the successor and Rama be sent into exile for fourteen years. I chose this story for the story notes because I am thinking of some character changes that could take place to create a story for the portfolio. (Above is a picture or Rama when he is sent into exile. Picture Source: Rama Exile ) Bibliography:  DivineArcher by F.J Gould

Reading Notes: Narayan Part D

Image
Once Hanuman makes it across the ocean of Lanka, he makes his way and finds sita in the Ashoka Vana where she is guarded by demons. Hanuan lets Indrajit, Ravana’s son, capture him and bring him to Ravana. Mahodara offers to defeat the monkeys. Hanuman is inclined to trust Vibhishana but Surgriva and Jambavan are suspicious. Rama treats Vibhishana as the ruler of Lanka in exile. Rama orders the sea god to help his armies across the water to lanka. Ravana sends out sends out his spies disguised as monkeys.   Rama orders the attack on lanka. Kumbakarna promises to defeat Rama. Ravana despairs when he hears of Kumbakarna’s defeat. Before Ravanas battle with Rama, Ravana sees omnious signs but he is still scornful of Rama because he is a mere mortal. Reading Notes: Narayan Guide C

Image
Because Sita is terrified for Rama’s well being she makes Lakshmana go help him. When Sita is left alone, Ravana picks up the ground she is standing on and fly’s away with her. Jatayu tries to rescue sita from Ravana but is killed in the process, but before he dies tells Rama and Lakshmana which way ravana went. Rama and Lakshmana head south to the monkey kingdom where the Hanuman sees there coming and disguises as a scholar which Rama sees right through. The demon Mayavi challenges Vali, then Vali chases Mayavi into a cave. Then Sugriva loses his wife. Vali can not mount Matanga because of a curse that was placed on him from when he killed Dundubhi and hurled its carcass, so it fell near the sage Matanga and angered him. Sita threw her jewelry when she was kidnapped, and the monkeys found it on the ground, then give it to Rama and agree to help find her. Sugriva challenges Vali, which vali laughs at. Rama hides and shoots at Vali during the fight. Then Vali argue...
