Story Lab Week 14

Image
For week 1 I chose to do a story lab instead of a story. The post I am choosing to read about is “Why you should open yourself up to the possibilities of Story” by Anthony Ehlers. In this story he talks about writers block and that one of the tactics is to just write every title down that goes with the subject you are going to write about. This might spark a little flame to start writing. Or another tactic is to just start writing and let your imagination take the lead, such as with the case of the girl getting off the bus and then coming back to no bus. She asks around and no one ever saw a bus or even remembered her. This is an example of letting your imagination take the lead. One of the writers quoted “Writers have no real area of expertise. They are merely generalists with a highly inflamed sense of punctuation.” This was said by Lorrie Moore, I found this quote interesting because I don’t know if I fully agree with this statement, because I do believe writers have an expertise ...

Story Lab: 5 Storytelling Software Options for Busy Writers

Image
The week 12 story lab I chose to write about was the “5 Storytelling Software Options for Busy Writers.” I thought this would possibly be helpful to me because I am often very busy, so maybe some of the software would be found useful to me. The five different Softwares consisted of Scrivener, Aeon Timeline, Story Mill, Storyist, and The Novel Factory. The 3 that would seem to be most helpful to me was the StoryMill, Storyist and the Novel Factory. With Story mill you can keep track of how many times you use a word. You can also set a daily writing goal that needs to be reached. I believe this would benefit me because often times I do not write every day, and when I do, I tend to repeat words, so this software would help me diversify my vocabulary. The Storyist helps the writer track the plot, characters, settings and helps keep the writing organized so that the writer can focus on telling the story. I believe this would be beneficial to me because if I can keep the process leadin...

Story Lab: 10 Good Reasons to Read More Books

Image
The article I chose to complete this story lab over was “10 Good Reasons To Read More Books”. This caught my eye because I do not read enough books and I need to read more. This article has ten main points that elaborates on why reading is beneficial. The first point was you can’t write if you don’t read. The second point was your general knowledge is abysmal if you don’t read. The third point was reading helps you develop your own philosophy on life. The fourth point was it helps you develop critical thinking skills. The fifth point is you can de-stress with minimal expense. The sixth point was you can keep your brain stimulated. The seventh point was you get to understand the world. The eighth point is you can learn social skills. The ninth point was you learn that you are not alone. The final point that reading makes you less likely to be a terrible person. The three that I believe fit me most consisted of the following. The first was you can’t write if you don’t read. Readi...

Story Lab: 3 Simple Ways to Kick-Start Your Writing

Image
For this assignment i decided to do a story lab over the article 3 Simple Ways To Kick-Start Your Writing by Anthony Ehlers. This article is about three main points, Suess it up, Rewind and Review and Dear Me. Suess it up discussed about loosening your stiff writing muscles, by writing something you would find say in a  Dr. Suess book. This will lead to a possibly better story, or having more of an open mind. The second point talked about editing your story. To edit effectively  you should print out the last few pages written , and then make gentle corrections, or add in a new word phrase. The final section called dear me talks about doing pretty much a brain dump. This consists of writing down everything on a note pad that is on your mind, and this is useful in clearing your mind to start a new story with a clean slate. The section of this article that i would say is most beneficial to me was rewind and review. This is because often i do not edit as much as I should, or i edi...

Story Lab: Writers Lab

Image
I used the story lab assignment to navigate the Writers Write website that was provided, and I read two of many helpful articles. One of the helpful articles was 10 Good Reasons To Read More Books I thought this was a good read because it hit on many points. One of the points that stuck with me was “You can keep your brain simulated”, this is interesting to me because it is something I try to do in periods of free time whether it is between classes, after class or before exams. I believe keeping a stimulated mindset throughout the day is key for a successful day. The second point that was interesting was “You’re less likely to be a terrible person”, this caught my attention because I had never really thought of it before. But after reading it talks about that reading improves empathy, helps your ability to communicate, as well as boosts your creativity. The second article I chose to read was Create PowerParagraphs For Stronger Storytelling . I chose to read this because sometime...
